Siggi's Dairy, known for its Icelandic skyr, was founded in 2004 by Siggi Hilmarsson in New York. The brand was born out of a desire to recreate the thick, high-protein, and low-sugar yogurt prevalent in Hilmarsson's native Iceland, which he found missing from American supermarket shelves. This commitment to 'simple ingredients, not a lot of sugar' became the cornerstone of the brand's identity.
In early 2018, Siggi's was acquired by the French dairy conglomerate Lactalis Group. This acquisition allowed the brand to expand its distribution significantly while maintaining its focus on traditional Icelandic recipes. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in the United States to serve the North American market, though Lactalis utilizes its global supply chain for distribution in other territories.
As of 2024 and beyond, Siggi's remains a key asset in the Lactalis portfolio, representing the premium health-conscious segment. The brand continues to operate with its original ethos, emphasizing clean labels and nutritional density under the ownership of one of the world's largest dairy companies.
