Wise, formerly known as TransferWise, is a leading fintech company that revolutionized how money is sent across borders. The brand was founded in 2011 with the mission to make international money transfers cheap, fair, and simple. Unlike traditional banks that often hide fees in exchange rate markups, Wise provides the mid-market exchange rate and charges a transparent upfront fee.
The brand was originally founded in London by two Estonian entrepreneurs, Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus. Taavet was the first employee at Skype, and both founders experienced the frustration of high bank fees when moving money between the UK and Estonia. This personal challenge led to the creation of their peer-to-peer transfer model. In 2021, the company rebranded from TransferWise to Wise to reflect its expansion into a comprehensive international account for holding multiple currencies and providing debit card services.
Wise is a publicly-traded company listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE: WISE). Its headquarters remain in London, while it maintains a significant operational and engineering hub in Tallinn, Estonia. As a global financial technology firm, it is regulated by various authorities worldwide, including the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK. The company remains independent, with its founders and various institutional investors holding significant stakes, steering its growth toward being the world’s most international account provider.
