Sony, one of the most iconic names in consumer electronics, was founded in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. Originally named Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp.), the company began in a bombed-out department store in post-war Tokyo. The brand name 'Sony' was adopted in 1958, derived from the Latin word 'sonus' (sound) and the slang term 'sonny boy,' reflecting a global ambition and a youthful, creative spirit.

Manufacturing and Design

During the 1960s and 1970s, many of Sony's legendary radio models, such as the wood-cased desktop receivers pictured here, were manufactured in Japan. This era established Japan's reputation for high-quality precision engineering and premium audio performance. These products were instrumental in shifting the global perception of 'Made in Japan' from low-cost imitations to high-end technological innovation.

Sony remains an independent global conglomerate. Its parent company, Sony Group Corporation, is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
