Lysol is one of the world's most recognized brands of household cleaning and disinfecting products. The brand's history began in 1889 when Gustav Raupenstrauch introduced the first Lysol antiseptic disinfectant in Germany to help combat a cholera epidemic. Shortly after its invention, it was brought to the United States by Lehn & Fink, where it became a staple for both medical and domestic hygiene. Throughout the 20th century, Lysol evolved from a hospital disinfectant into a broad consumer line including sprays, wipes, and multi-surface cleaners.
Today, Lysol is owned by the British multinational consumer goods company Reckitt (formerly Reckitt Benckiser), which acquired the brand in 1994. While the brand has deep American roots in terms of market presence and historical ownership by U.S. companies like Sterling Drug, its global footprint is managed from Reckitt's headquarters in the United Kingdom. Manufacturing for the brand is highly decentralized to support local markets; for example, North American supplies are largely produced in specialized facilities in New Jersey, Ohio, and Michigan, while other regions are served by plants in Europe and Asia. This global production network ensures that Lysol remains a leading name in hygiene across more than 40 markets worldwide.
