Amazon Alexa is a world-leading virtual assistant technology developed by Amazon. The project was conceptualized in 2011 at Amazon's Lab126 research facility in Sunnyvale, California, under the code name 'Doppler.' To build the advanced speech recognition and natural language processing required for the service, Amazon strategically acquired several specialized startups, most notably the Polish company Ivona (known for its speech synthesis) and the British company Evi. The product was officially launched in late 2014 alongside the Amazon Echo smart speaker.
The hardware that powers Alexa, such as the Echo and Echo Dot, is primarily manufactured in China through major contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Quanta Computer. Manufacturing hubs in Guangdong province, particularly Shenzhen and Guangzhou, are central to the production of these electronic components. In recent years, Amazon has also diversified its supply chain, exploring production in other regions such as Vietnam to enhance logistics and mitigate trade risks.
Today, Alexa remains a core part of Amazon's ecosystem, controlled by the ultimate parent company Amazon.com, Inc. The brand name 'Alexa' was inspired by the Library of Alexandria, signifying the assistant's role as a vast repository of knowledge. It has grown from a simple smart speaker voice into a comprehensive smart home platform integrated into millions of third-party devices worldwide.
