Lebara is a multinational telecommunications company founded in 2001 by Ratheesan Yoganathan, Rasiah Ranjith Leon, and Baskaran Kandiah. Originally established in the United Kingdom, the brand was created to provide affordable international calling services for migrant communities. Lebara operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), meaning it does not own the physical network infrastructure but leases it from major national providers.
Over the years, the brand has grown significantly across Europe and other continents. In 2017, the company was acquired by Palmarium, a private equity firm based in Switzerland. More recently, in 2024, Lebara was acquired by Waterland Private Equity, which now serves as the ultimate owner. While the brand has its roots in London, its operational reach is global, with services tailored to local markets through various partnerships. Manufacturing of physical products like SIM cards occurs in various locations globally depending on the distribution region.
