The Continente brand originated in Portugal in 1985 with the opening of the country's first hypermarket. It is owned by MC Sonae (formerly Sonae MC), a major subsidiary of the Sonae Group. While Sonae is a multinational conglomerate with diverse interests, its core retail operations are deeply rooted in Portugal, where the majority of Continente brand products are manufactured and distributed through their extensive network of supermarkets and hypermarkets.
