Philadelphia cream cheese is a globally recognized dairy brand that originated in the United States in 1872. While the name suggests a connection to Pennsylvania, it was actually invented in New York by William Lawrence and named 'Philadelphia' because the city was then renowned for high-quality food. The brand was eventually acquired by the Kraft Cheese Company, which later became part of Kraft Foods.
Today, the ownership of the brand is split geographically. In most international markets outside of North America (including Europe, where this 'Schnittlauch' or chive-flavoured variant is sold), the brand is owned and manufactured by Mondelēz International. In North America, the heritage brand remains under the ownership of The Kraft Heinz Company. Manufacturing occurs in several countries across Europe, such as Germany and Spain, to supply local markets.
