Hofbräu München is one of Munich's oldest and most prestigious breweries, officially known as Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München. The brand's history dates back to 1589 when it was founded by William V, Duke of Bavaria, specifically to satisfy the thirst of the royal court and its servants, who were dissatisfied with the locally brewed beer at the time.
Today, the brewery remains under state ownership, specifically managed by the Free State of Bavaria. This unique status makes it one of the few large breweries in Germany that is not part of a private global conglomerate. The beer is brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law) at the brewery's modern facility in Munich-Riem, ensuring that the traditional Munich brewing heritage is preserved for international distribution.
