It is the flagship product of the Müller brand, which was developed into a multinational dairy company by Theo Müller from his father's small regional dairy founded in 1896. The product is known for its distinctive plastic bottles and various flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and banana.

While the brand has its roots in Aretsried, Bavaria, Müller has expanded significantly across Europe. Manufacturing primarily takes place in Germany (notably at the large facility in Leppersdorf), but the group also operates major production sites in the United Kingdom and other European countries to serve local markets. The brand remains privately held by the Müller family through the Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller.
