Neutrogena is a globally recognized skincare brand, perhaps most famous for its 'Norwegian Formula' line. Despite the name, the brand's heritage is rooted in Los Angeles, USA, where it was founded in 1930 by Emanuel Stolaroff as a specialty cosmetics company called Natone. The iconic 'Norwegian Formula' itself was inspired by the heavy-duty glycerin-based balms used by Norwegian fishermen to protect their skin from the harsh Arctic environment.
For many years, the brand operated as an independent entity until it was acquired by the healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson in 1994. In 2023, as part of a major corporate restructuring, Johnson & Johnson spun off its consumer health division into a new independent company called Kenvue. As of 2026, Kenvue remains the ultimate owner of the brand. While the brand is American by origin, its manufacturing is highly decentralized to support global distribution; products sold in European markets, such as the UK and Ireland, are typically manufactured in facilities located in France or Greece.
