Hennessy is a world-renowned brand of Cognac, synonymous with luxury and heritage. Founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer serving in the army of Louis XV, the brand originated in the Cognac region of France. To this day, the production remains strictly localized in and around the town of Cognac, following rigid Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) regulations that require the spirit to be distilled from specific grapes and aged in French oak barrels within the region.
Over the centuries, Hennessy evolved from a family-run trading house into a global powerhouse. In 1971, it merged with Moët & Chandon to form Moët Hennessy, which later merged with Louis Vuitton in 1987 to create LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE. This conglomerate, headquartered in Paris, France, is the world's largest luxury goods company. Today, while LVMH holds the majority stake (66%), the spirits giant Diageo also maintains a significant minority ownership (34%) in the Moët Hennessy division.
