Euro banknotes represent the physical currency of the Eurozone, a monetary union of 20 European Union member states. The currency was officially introduced on January 1, 1999, for electronic transfers and became physical legal tender on January 1, 2002.
Manufacturing of these banknotes occurs at various high-security printing facilities across the European Union. Each country within the Eurozone is responsible for a portion of the total production, using a decentralized system coordinated by the European Central Bank (ECB) to ensure uniformity and security.
The overall management and issuance policy are governed by the European Central Bank, headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. While the ECB has the sole right to authorize the issuance of banknotes, the individual National Central Banks (NCBs) of the Eurozone member states physically issue and withdraw the currency.
