The Berliner Pfannkuchen, often simply called a Berliner, Krapfen, or Kreppel depending on the region, is a traditional German fried dough pastry similar to a doughnut but without a central hole. They are typically made from a sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil and filled with jam, marmalade, or custard, and finally dusted with powdered sugar or icing.
While these pastries are synonymous with German bakery culture and the Carnival season, they are manufactured and sold by countless independent bakeries, supermarket chains, and industrial food producers across Central Europe. Because these specific items are unbranded and sold in generic bakery paper, they represent a generic artisanal or mass-produced food item rather than a single corporate brand. Ownership of such products typically rests with the local bakery or the retail chain's private label supplier where they were purchased.
