Catan, originally known as The Settlers of Catan, is one of the world's most famous modern board games. It was designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany in 1995. The game revolutionized the tabletop industry with its resource-trading mechanics and modular board.

Today, the brand is owned by Catan GmbH, the family company founded by Klaus Teuber. The international publishing and distribution rights are held by the Asmodee Group, a French entertainment giant that acquired the previous rights holder, Mayfair Games, and integrated the brand into its Z-Man Games and Catan Studio labels. Production for various language editions, such as this Norwegian version (Grunnspill), occurs in several locations globally, including Germany, the United States, and China, depending on the component type and regional distribution needs.
