Amstel is a historic beer brand that takes its name from the Amstel River in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Launched in 1870, it quickly established itself as a premier European lager known for its quality and traditional brewing methods. Over its century-and-a-half history, it has expanded from a local favorites to a globally recognized brand available in over 100 countries.
Originally brewed by the Amstel Brewery, the brand was acquired in 1968 by the fellow Dutch brewing powerhouse, Heineken. This acquisition integrated Amstel into one of the world's most extensive distribution networks. While the original Amstel Brewery in Amsterdam closed in 1982 and production moved to Heineken's main facility in Zoeterwoude, the brand remains deeply rooted in its Dutch heritage.
Today, Amstel is manufactured in multiple countries across the globe under the supervision of Heineken N.V. to meet regional demand. It remains a core international brand for the Heineken group, positioned as a premium pilsner often marketed with a focus on its 100% malt composition and long-standing tradition.
