Augustiner-Bräu is Munich's oldest independent brewery, with roots dating back to 1328 when it was founded by Augustinian monks. Unlike many other major German breweries that have been acquired by multinational conglomerates, Augustiner remains fiercely independent and deeply tied to its Bavarian heritage.
The unique ownership structure is the result of Edith Haberland-Wagner’s legacy. Upon inheriting a majority stake in 1981, she established the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation (Edith-Haberland-Wagner-Stiftung) to ensure the brewery would never be sold to a corporate entity. Today, the foundation owns 51% of the brewery, using its dividends to fund charitable projects, cultural preservation, and youth sports in the Munich region. The beer is exclusively produced in Munich, maintaining traditional brewing methods and historical purity standards.
