Focal-JMlab, commonly known as Focal, is a prestigious French brand founded in 1979 by Jacques Mahul in Saint-Étienne. The company initially began as a small laboratory creating high-end speaker drivers before expanding into complete loudspeaker systems and professional studio monitors. Over the decades, it has become synonymous with audiophile-grade quality and French engineering excellence.
Focal is distinct in the audio industry for its commitment to domestic manufacturing. Their high-end loudspeakers and hi-fi headphones are manufactured at their specialized facility in Saint-Étienne, France. This vertical integration allows them to maintain strict quality control over their proprietary technologies, such as Beryllium tweeters and Flax driver cones. While entry-level product ranges or certain components may be sourced globally, the brand's core identity remains rooted in French craftsmanship.
In 2011, Focal-JMlab merged with the British high-end audio manufacturer Naim Audio to form Vervent Audio Group. This strategic partnership allowed both brands to leverage their technical expertise while remaining independent in their product philosophies. As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, Vervent Audio Group remains the parent company, owned largely by private equity firms (such as Alpha Private Equity) with headquarters in France. The group continues to lead the global market in premium sound systems for home, professional, and automotive sectors.
