Black Sheep Ale is an iconic amber ale produced by the Black Sheep Brewery, which is deeply rooted in the brewing heritage of Masham, North Yorkshire, England. Established in 1992 by Paul Theakston, a member of the famous Theakston brewing family, the brand was born out of a desire to create an independent family-run brewery following the sale of the original family business to a major conglomerate. For decades, it stood as a symbol of independent regional brewing in the UK.

In May 2023, following financial challenges, the Black Sheep Brewery was acquired by Breal Capital, an investment firm based in London. Under this new ownership, while the brewery continues its production operations at the historic Masham site to maintain its authentic British character and quality, it is now part of a larger portfolio of craft breweries. The brand remains a staple in British pubs and supermarkets, celebrated for its robust malty flavor and traditional Yorkshire brewing methods.
