Wagner Big City Pizza Budapest is a deep-dish frozen pizza inspired by Hungarian flavors, featuring pepperoni sausage, mozzarella, and edam cheese on a crust that is airy on the inside and crispy on the outside. The brand traces its roots back to 1952 when Ernst Wagner founded the company in Nonnweiler, Germany, eventually launching its first frozen pizzas in the early 1970s.
While the brand was historically a German family business, it was fully acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé in 2010. In a significant strategic shift starting around 2023 and continuing into 2026, Nestlé entered into a joint venture with the private equity firm PAI Partners. This partnership created the 'European Pizza Group,' which now oversees the Wagner brand along with other frozen pizza labels like Buitoni.
Most Wagner products are manufactured at the original high-tech facility in Nonnweiler, Germany, which remains one of the largest frozen pizza production sites in Europe. Due to the joint venture's expanded regional reach, production may also occur at the group's other specialized facilities, such as the site in Benevento, Italy, to serve the broader European market.
