Trident is a globally recognized brand of sugar-free chewing gum. Originally introduced by American Chicle in the early 1960s, it gained prominence as one of the first sugar-free gum products endorsed by dentists. The brand's history is marked by several high-profile corporate acquisitions: American Chicle was bought by Warner-Lambert, which later merged with Pfizer. In 2003, Cadbury Schweppes acquired the Pfizer confectionery business, and in 2010, Cadbury was famously acquired by Kraft Foods, which eventually split its snack business into Mondelēz International.
In a significant shift in 2023, Mondelēz International sold its developed-market gum business to Perfetti Van Melle. Consequently, Trident is now part of the Perfetti Van Melle portfolio, a privately held Italian-Dutch confectionery giant. While the brand was born in the United States, its manufacturing now takes place in various global facilities owned by Perfetti Van Melle to serve different regional markets like Iberia and Greece, as indicated by the multilingual packaging.
