Skoda is a historic automotive brand with roots dating back to 1895 in Mladá Boleslav, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now the Czech Republic. Originally founded as a bicycle manufacturer named Laurin & Klement by Václav Laurin and Václav Klement, the company transitioned to motorcycles and eventually produced its first automobile in 1905. The brand became 'Skoda' following a merger with the industrial giant Skoda Works in 1925.
In the modern era, the Octavia stands as Skoda's most popular model, representing a significant portion of its global sales. While the primary production hub remains in Mladá Boleslav, the vehicle is also assembled or manufactured in various international facilities to serve global markets, including locations in India, Slovakia, and China. This distributed manufacturing network allows the brand to maintain its competitive edge and accessibility across more than 100 markets worldwide.
Since 2000, Skoda Auto has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, a German multinational automotive giant. This partnership has integrated Skoda into one of the world's largest automotive alliances, sharing platforms, engines, and technology with other major brands like Volkswagen and Audi. Despite this ownership, the brand retains its distinct identity and 'Simply Clever' philosophy, remaining headquartered in its ancestral home of the Czech Republic.
