The Variable Balans is an iconic ergonomic kneeling chair designed by Peter Opsvik in 1979. It was originally introduced under the Stokke brand but is now the flagship product of Varier Furniture. The chair is designed to encourage 'active sitting,' allowing the body to move and find its own equilibrium through a rocking motion.
Today, Varier Furniture, a Norwegian company, owns the rights to the Balans concept. While the company is headquartered in Oslo, Norway, the manufacturing of the wooden components and final assembly typically takes place in Poland, a major hub for European furniture production. The chair remains a staple of Scandinavian design, celebrated for its unique blend of function and minimalist aesthetics.
