Rizla is an iconic brand with a legacy dating back to the 16th century in France. The name itself is a portmanteau: 'Riz' is the French word for rice (referring to the rice-based paper introduced in 1865) and 'La+' is an abbreviation of the founding Lacroix family name, where 'La Croix' translates to 'The Cross'. For centuries, the Lacroix family operated the business, even gaining a license from Napoleon Bonaparte to supply rolling papers to his troops.

Ownership transitioned away from the founding family in 1978 and the brand was eventually acquired by the British multinational tobacco giant Imperial Brands (formerly Imperial Tobacco) in 1997. Following the acquisition, manufacturing was consolidated to improve efficiency. This led to the closure of historical factories in France and the United Kingdom.

Today, production is primarily centralized at a dedicated high-capacity facility in Wilrijk, Belgium. This site serves as the global hub for Rizla products, including the Ultra Slim filters shown, which are distributed to over 120 countries worldwide. The brand remains a market leader in the roll-your-own segment, maintained by Imperial Brands' global logistics and manufacturing infrastructure.
