Côte d'Or is a Belgian icon of the chocolate world, originally founded in 1883 by Charles Neuhaus. The name is a French reference to the Gold Coast, now Ghana, which was a primary source of cocoa beans for the brand. Over more than a century, Côte d'Or has become world-famous for its high-quality dark and milk chocolate, often distinguished by its elephant logo and thick, chunky tablet formats.
While the brand maintains its Belgian identity and heritage, it is now part of a global snacking empire. It underwent several ownership changes throughout the 20th century before being acquired by Jacobs Suchard, which eventually merged into Kraft Foods. Today, Côte d'Or is owned by Mondelēz International, an American multinational conglomerate. Production remains heavily concentrated in Belgium, particularly at the iconic factory in Halle, ensuring the brand keeps its traditional Belgian manufacturing roots even under international corporate ownership.
