The Scala programming language was originally designed and developed by Martin Odersky and his research group at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. It was first released in 2004 as a high-level language that combines object-oriented and functional programming paradigms.
Today, the language's development is managed by the Scala Center at EPFL and Lightbend, Inc. (formerly known as Typesafe). While the brand and intellectual property are rooted in Swiss academia, much of the commercial development and corporate backing occur in the United States. It remains an open-source project with a global community of contributors.
