Norco is one of Australia's most iconic and enduring dairy cooperatives. Founded in 1895 in Clunes, New South Wales, it began as the North Coast Fresh Food & Cold Storage Co-operative Ltd. Unlike many other major Australian dairy brands that have been sold to multinational corporations, Norco has remained a 100% Australian farmer-owned cooperative for over 125 years.
The brand's manufacturing remains concentrated in Australia, with major processing facilities located in northern New South Wales and South East Queensland. These sites handle a wide range of products including fresh milk, cream, and award-winning ice cream. Because the cooperative is owned by the very farmers who supply the milk, the profits are returned to the members and their local communities.
As of 2024 and looking toward the future, Norco continues to operate as an independent cooperative. It serves as a rare example of a large-scale agricultural business that has successfully maintained its original foundation and ownership structure in a landscape increasingly dominated by global food conglomerates.
