Apache OpenOffice is a free and open-source office productivity software suite. It was originally derived from StarOffice, a suite developed by the German company Star Division in the 1980s. After Sun Microsystems acquired Star Division in 1999, they released the source code as OpenOffice.org in 2000 to compete with Microsoft Office.
Following Oracle Corporation's acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010, the project faced internal shifts leading to the creation of LibreOffice by some contributors. In 2011, Oracle donated the code to the Apache Software Foundation, which has managed it ever since. As an open-source project, its code is developed and maintained by a worldwide community of volunteers rather than a single manufacturing plant.
