LibreOffice is a powerful, free, and open-source office suite that emerged as a fork of OpenOffice.org in 2010. It is a successor to the long-standing StarOffice lineage, which began in Germany during the 1980s. Unlike commercial software produced in a single factory, LibreOffice is developed collaboratively by a global community of developers, meaning its 'manufacturing' or coding happens across multiple countries simultaneously.
The project is managed by The Document Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Germany. As it is open-source software distributed under the Mozilla Public License, it does not have a traditional corporate 'ultimate owner' in the sense of a profit-driven parent company. Instead, it is governed by a meritocratic foundation that ensures the software remains free for all users while receiving contributions from major tech entities and independent volunteers worldwide.
