Avira is a prominent name in the cybersecurity industry, best known for its antivirus software and suite of online security tools. The company was established in 1986 by Tjark Auerbach in Tettnang, Germany, making it one of the oldest antivirus providers in the world.
Starting as a German family-owned business, Avira gained global traction by offering high-quality freemium security solutions. Over the decades, the brand has expanded its portfolio to include VPNs, system optimization tools, and mobile security.
In recent years, the brand has undergone significant ownership changes. Following an acquisition by Investcorp, Avira was subsequently sold to the American software giant NortonLifeLock (now known as Gen Digital Inc.) in late 2020. This acquisition integrated Avira into a massive global portfolio of consumer safety brands, including Norton, Avast, and LifeLock, while maintaining its operations and development focus primarily in its original home of Germany.
