The Mitsubishi Pajero is an iconic full-size sport utility vehicle that has become synonymous with off-road capability and reliability. First introduced in 1982, the Pajero (also known internationally as the Montero or Shogun) was developed by Mitsubishi Motors to compete in the emerging 4x4 market. Its legacy is deeply rooted in motorsports, particularly the Dakar Rally, where it holds a record-breaking number of victories.
While predominantly manufactured at the Pajero Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in Sakahogi, Gifu, Japan, the vehicle has seen assembly in various international locations over its multi-generational lifespan to meet local market demands. This includes production or assembly lines in countries like Brazil, China, and India. Despite its global manufacturing footprint, the engineering and core design remain fundamentally Japanese.
The Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, remains the ultimate owner and manufacturer of the brand. As part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the brand benefits from shared technologies while maintaining its distinct identity. Although production of the classic Pajero ceased in Japan in 2021, the nameplate continues to live on in various markets through different models and remains a cornerstone of the company's automotive heritage.
