Sampoerna is one of Indonesia's most iconic tobacco brands, originally founded in 1913 by Liem Seeng Tee. The brand is synonymous with 'kretek' (clove cigarettes), which are a cultural staple in the Indonesian archipelago. The 'A' series, including the A Prima variant shown in the image, represents the brand's premium machine-rolled cigarette line, blending high-quality tobacco with cloves and special sauces to create the distinct Indonesian flavor profile.
While the brand was founded by the Sampoerna family in Surabaya, it underwent a major corporate shift in 2005. At that time, Altria's international arm, Philip Morris International (PMI), acquired a controlling stake in PT Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk. Consequently, while the brand remains deeply rooted in Indonesian culture and is primarily manufactured in several large-scale facilities across Indonesia, it is now part of a global tobacco portfolio managed from Switzerland and the United States.
Today, Sampoerna is the largest tobacco company in Indonesia. The A Prima variant is positioned as a sophisticated kretek option. The packaging features mandatory Indonesian health warnings and clear branding associated with the 'A Mild' legacy. Following the spin-off of Philip Morris International from Altria, the brand is fully under the stewardship of PMI, which oversees its production, local distribution, and strategic direction in the Southeast Asian market.
