VAIO was originally established as a dedicated PC brand by the Japanese electronics giant Sony in 1996. The brand name, which stands for Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer, became iconic for blending high-end design with advanced multimedia capabilities. Throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, VAIO laptops were considered premium competitors in the global personal computing market.
In 2014, Sony Corporation sold its PC business as part of a restructuring effort to focus on mobile and gaming sectors. The VAIO brand was acquired by VAIO Corporation, a company backed by the investment firm Japan Industrial Partners. While Sony maintains a small minority stake, VAIO now operates as an independent entity. Production primarily takes place in China for global markets, though high-end 'Made in Japan' models continue to be manufactured at the brand's original headquarters in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture.
