Belomorkanal is one of the most iconic and longest-standing tobacco brands in Russian history. Originally introduced in 1932 to commemorate the completion of the White Sea–Baltic Canal, this brand is a classic example of a 'papirosa'—a type of cigarette that features a long, hollow cardboard tube attached to a shorter tobacco-filled section. The packaging features a distinctive map showing the canal system, which has remained largely unchanged for decades.

While the brand was originally created by the state-owned tobacco enterprise 'Uritskiy Tobacco Factory' during the Soviet era, it was never patented as a trademark by a single entity for a long time. This led to multiple factories across the former Soviet Union producing their own versions under the same name.

In modern times, the brand name has been localized and licensed. While various Russian tobacco manufacturers have produced it, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) became the ultimate owner of the primary manufacturing facilities (such as the Petro factory in Saint Petersburg) that historically produced the brand. Today, it remains a symbol of Soviet industrial history and a niche choice for smokers in the region.
