Aiwa is a historic Japanese electronics brand that became famous worldwide for its audio equipment during the late 20th century. Originally founded as AIKO Denki Sangyo Co., Ltd in 1951, the company specialized in microphones and later expanded into tape recorders and high-fidelity shelf systems. In the 1960s, Sony acquired a controlling interest in the company, leading to decades of collaboration where Aiwa served as a more affordable, youth-oriented alternative to Sony's premium line.
Following financial difficulties in the late 1990s, Sony fully acquired Aiwa in 2002. However, the brand struggled to compete in the digital era and was largely discontinued by Sony around 2006. Starting in 2015, the rights to the Aiwa brand were sold off in various territories. In the United States, the brand was acquired by a Chicago-based company (Aiwa Corp.), while Japanese rights were eventually acquired by Towada Audio. This means that while the brand has Japanese roots, modern ownership and manufacturing are fragmented globally, with most production taking place in China and other parts of Southeast Asia under licensed arrangements.
