Matte Leão is an iconic Brazilian beverage brand, deeply rooted in the country's tea culture. It was originally founded in 1901 by Agostinho Ermelino de Leão Jr. in Curitiba, Paraná, initially focusing on the processing of yerba mate. For over a century, the 'lion' brand became synonymous with mate consumption in Brazil, particularly the toasted version served cold in cups on Rio de Janeiro's beaches.
In 2007, the brand underwent a significant transition when it was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company. This move integrated the traditional local product into a global distribution network. Today, the product is primarily manufactured in Brazil through various bottling partners within the Coca-Cola system, such as Coca-Cola FEMSA and Andina, ensuring its presence across the entire territory. The brand remains under the ultimate ownership of The Coca-Cola Company, headquartered in the United States, which manages its expansion into new formats like ready-to-drink bottles and cups.
