Sol is an iconic Mexican lager with a heritage dating back to 1899. It was first brewed by a German master brewer at the 'El Salto del Agua' brewery near Mexico City. According to brand legend, the name 'Sol' (meaning 'Sun' in Spanish) was inspired by a ray of sunlight that illuminated the first batch during its creation.

Historically, the brand was produced by Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, which became a significant force in the Mexican beer market. In 2010, the Dutch brewing company Heineken N.V. acquired FEMSA's beer operations, which included Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, thereby becoming the ultimate owner of the brand.

As of 2026, Sol is a global brand produced in multiple locations to serve various markets while maintaining its Mexican roots. While primary production continues in Mexican breweries like those in Orizaba and Guadalajara to preserve its authentic heritage, it is also brewed in other regional facilities, such as Heineken's solar-powered brewery in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands. In the United States, Molson Coors manages the marketing and distribution of the brand under a long-term licensing agreement with Heineken.
