Wattyl is one of the most recognized and historic paint brands in the Oceania region. Founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1915 by H.R. Walters, the company initially gained fame for its specialized 'Crystal Veneer' finish. Over the decades, it expanded from a small local furniture polish manufacturer into a dominant force in the architectural and industrial coatings market across Australia and New Zealand.

The manufacturing operations for Wattyl are heavily concentrated in Australia and New Zealand, utilizing local facilities to service the domestic construction and home improvement sectors. This local presence has allowed the brand to tailor its chemical formulations specifically for the harsh UV and environmental conditions found in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several multinational hands in recent history. Previously owned by the American company Valspar and later the Sherwin-Williams Company, Wattyl was acquired in 2021 by the Hempel Group, a global coatings supplier based in Denmark. Under Hempel's ownership, Wattyl continues to operate as a leading protective and decorative brand, benefiting from Hempel’s global research and development resources while maintaining its heritage as a staple of Australian industry.
