Originally created in Austria by the Austrian Tobacco Monopoly (Oesterreichische Tabakregie), the brand became famous for its distinctive blue and white packaging and its minimalist 'NIL' name. The name is often associated with the phrase 'Nihil sine causa' (Nothing without cause), reflecting its long-standing cultural presence in Central Europe.

Over the decades, ownership shifted during the privatization of state monopolies. Today, the brand is owned by Japan Tobacco International (JTI). While the brand originated in Austria, the production for the German market, where the packaging in the image is from (as indicated by the German health warnings), is largely handled by JTI's manufacturing facilities in Germany, particularly in Trier. JTI, headquartered in Switzerland, is the international tobacco division of Japan Tobacco Inc., ensuring a global supply chain for this heritage brand.
