Morrisons, formally known as Wm Morrison Supermarkets, was founded by William Morrison in 1899 as an egg and butter stall in Bradford, England. Throughout the 20th century, it expanded from a local market stall into one of the 'Big Four' supermarkets in the UK. Historically a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange, it underwent a significant ownership change in late 2021 when it was acquired by the American private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R). Despite the change in ownership, the brand remains centrally headquartered in Bradford, West Yorkshire, and continues to operate as a distinctly British retailer.
