Twinkies are one of the most iconic American snack products, first introduced in 1930 by James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company. Originally filled with banana cream, the recipe switched to vanilla cream during World War II due to banana rationing, creating the classic 'Golden Sponge Cake' flavor profile known today.

The Hostess brand has a complex corporate history, having survived bankruptcy in 2012 when it was temporarily liquidated before being revived by Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co. Under this new leadership, Hostess Brands, Inc. returned to major profitability and expanded its product line. In late 2023, the brand reached its most recent major milestone when it was acquired by The J.M. Smucker Company. Today, Twinkies remain a staple of American pop culture, produced primarily in large-scale baking facilities across the United States, including major operations in Kansas and Illinois.
