Del Monte is one of the world's most recognized food brands, with a complex history of regional licensing. Founded in California in 1886, the brand originally began as a premium coffee blend for the Hotel Del Monte. Over the following century, it grew into a global leader in canned fruits and vegetables through various mergers, most notably the 1916 formation of the California Packing Corporation (Calpak).
In recent years, the brand's ownership has been split between separate entities. Del Monte Foods, Inc. (responsible for canned products in the U.S.) was acquired by Del Monte Pacific Limited in 2014. However, following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in July 2025, a major restructuring was announced in early 2026. As of March 2026, Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. has acquired the bulk of these assets—including the vegetable, tomato, and refrigerated fruit lines—effectively reuniting much of the brand under a single owner for the first time in decades. Other segments like shelf-stable fruit were sold to Pacific Coast Producers, and the broth business (College Inn) was acquired by B&G Foods. Manufacturing remains global, with major facilities located in the United States, Mexico, the Philippines, and various other regions to serve local markets.
