Häagen-Dazs is a premium ice cream brand founded in New York, United States, in 1960. While it sounds Scandinavian, the name was actually invented by its American founders, Reuben and Rose Mattus, to convey an image of old-world craftsmanship.
Today, the brand's ownership is split: in the United States and Canada, the brand is licensed to Froneri (a joint venture involving Nestlé), while for the rest of the world, including Spain and Europe, it is owned and operated by General Mills. Most Häagen-Dazs products sold in the European market are manufactured in a dedicated facility in Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines, France, using high-quality local ingredients.
