Milka is one of the world's most iconic chocolate brands, easily recognized by its distinctive lilac packaging and the 'Milka cow' mascot. The brand originated in Switzerland in 1901, founded by Philippe Suchard. It became famous for its milk chocolate which utilized Alpine milk, a tradition that continues to be a core part of its brand identity today.
While the brand has Swiss roots, its primary manufacturing facilities moved as the company grew and changed ownership. Today, the majority of Milka chocolate sold globally is produced in Lörrach, Germany, though the company maintains several other European production sites to meet demand.
Ownership of Milka has transitioned through various mergers, from Interfood to Jacobs Suchard, eventually being acquired by Kraft Foods. In 2012, Kraft Foods split, and Milka became a flagship brand under Mondelēz International. Mondelēz, headquartered in the United States, continues to manage the brand's global distribution and marketing, maintaining Milka's position as a leader in the European confectionery market.
