Rose's Lime Juice Cordial, often simply referred to as Rose's, is the world's first branded fruit juice beverage. It was created by Lauchlan Rose in Leith, Scotland, in 1867 to help sailors comply with the Merchant Shipping Act, which required ships to carry lime juice as a preventative against scurvy. Rose developed a method for preserving lime juice with sugar rather than alcohol, leading to the creation of this iconic mixer.
Today, the brand ownership is divided geographically. Globally and in Europe (including Sweden), the brand is part of the Schweppes portfolio, owned by the Japanese conglomerate Suntory. However, in the United States and Canada, the brand rights are held by Keurig Dr Pepper. Production usually takes place in various countries depending on the regional distributor, with European stocks often produced in the United Kingdom or other continental hubs. It remains a staple in bars for classic cocktails like the Gimlet.
