The Alpro brand was founded in Belgium in 1980 by Philippe Vandemoortele as a subsidiary of the Vandemoortele Group. Over the decades, it has become Europe's leading plant-based brand, specializing in soy, almond, oat, and rice-based products.

The brand underwent several shifts in ownership, having been sold to WhiteWave Foods in 2009, which was later acquired by the French multinational Danone in 2017. Today, Alpro is a core part of Danone's plant-based division and is marketed under the Danone Specialized Nutrition umbrella in various regions.
