Marabou is one of Sweden's most iconic brands, synonymous with high-quality chocolate. Founded in 1916 by Johan Throne Holst, the brand was established as a Swedish counterpart to the Norwegian chocolate brand Freia. The name was chosen because the stork, the symbol of Freia, is known as the Marabou stork in French.
Starting with its factory in Sundbyberg, Marabou quickly became a Swedish favorite. The brand revolutionized its chocolate formula in the mid-20th century to create its signature taste. Today, while the brand remains a staple of Swedish culture, it is owned by the global snacking giant Mondelez International. Most of the production for the Scandinavian market still takes place at the historic factory in Upplands Väsby, Sweden.
