Lyle's Golden Syrup is one of the world's oldest and most iconic kitchen cupboard staples. It was first produced by Abram Lyle & Sons in West Silvertown, London, in 1883. The brand is famous for its distinctive green and gold packaging and its logo featuring a lion and bees, which is recognized as the world's oldest branding and packaging by Guinness World Records.
The product is a thick, amber-colored form of inverted sugar syrup made during the process of refining sugar cane juice into sugar. It remains a hallmark of British baking and cooking. Historically originating from the Plaistow Wharf refinery, the production continues to be centered in London, maintaining its long-standing heritage.
Today, the brand is owned by American Sugar Refining, Inc. (ASR Group), though it continues to operate and produce in the UK through Tate & Lyle Sugars. It is important to note that while the 'Tate & Lyle' brand name remains, the sugar refining business was sold by the original Tate & Lyle PLC to ASR Group in 2010.
