Kopke is recognized as the oldest Port wine house, established in 1638 by Christiano Kopke and his son, Nicolau Kopke, who had come to Portugal from Hamburg. Originally founded as a trading company, it eventually shifted its focus entirely to the production and export of Port wine. The brand has maintained a prestigious reputation for centuries, particularly for its 'Colheita' ports, which are single-harvest tawny ports aged in wood.

Today, Kopke is produced and bottled in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Since 2006, the brand has been under the ownership of Sogevinus Fine Wines, S.A., a major Portuguese group specializing in the production and distribution of premium wines. Sogevinus is itself owned by the Spanish bank Abanca. This ownership structure ensures that the historic tradition of Kopke is backed by modern institutional investment while remaining deeply rooted in the Douro region of Portugal.
