The Jodekoek (or Jewish Cookie) is a traditional Dutch shortbread cookie known for its large, flat, circular shape. The most famous producer, Davelaar, began baking these cookies in Alkmaar in 1883. The recipe originally came from a Jewish baker in Amsterdam who sold it to Dirk Davelaar in the late 19th century. Davelaar transformed the local specialty into a national icon, packaging them in their signature yellow tins to maintain freshness.
While the brand remained independent for over a century, it was eventually acquired to ensure wider distribution and modernization of production facilities. Today, the cookies are produced in a specialized bakery in Zwaag, Netherlands. The brand is currently part of the Lotus Bakeries portfolio, ensuring that this regional Dutch classic has the logistical support of a global confectionery leader while maintaining its original baking standards and heritage.
